The short version: your budget stays on your device. If you switch on Sync, only an encrypted copy leaves it. If you switch on the usage count, the app sends one short report a week, with no budget data. This site uses no cookies and asks for nothing. Every product link goes to Etsy.
The apps and the free demos
Calm Money, Calm Money Home, Calm Week and Sole Trader keep everything you type in your own browser, on your own device. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else unless you turn on Sync or the usage count. Clearing your browser's data removes it, so download a backup now and then.
Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits to the free demos too, without cookies. The apps you buy aren't counted: they block the counter. The only count a bought app can send is the weekly usage count below.
The weekly usage count (off unless you switch it on). In the full apps, you can turn on Help us see what gets used in Settings. Then the app sends us one short report a week. The report says which app and edition you have, and which week it covers. It also carries a random device number, made on your device. Our apps share it when they run in the same browser. The number is not linked to any name, email or Etsy order. But it does link your reports from one week to the next, until you reset it. The free demos never send a report.
The report has four yes or no answers. Did you open the app? Did you add something? Did you import a file? Did Sync run? Adding something means a spend in Calm Money, a payment, expense or journey in Sole Trader, a tick or new item in Calm Week, or a new or changed place in Calm Money Home. It never sends amounts, budget names, notes, bank details, your pairing code, any name or email address, or where you are.
We store the report without your IP address or browser details. Cloudflare runs the service for us. As with every request to the service, Cloudflare keeps a short log of each request for up to 7 days. That log includes the IP address and browser. The usage table stores none of it. Reports are deleted after 26 weeks. We only ever look at totals. To stop, switch it off in Settings. To break the link with past reports, use Reset device number next to the switch.
Sync between devices (optional)
Sync is off until you switch it on. When it's on, your device encrypts your data before it leaves, and only that encrypted data is sent to our server on Cloudflare (Cloudflare Workers, D1 and R2). The server can't read it: the key is worked out on your device from an eight-word code the server never sees. See Security for how it works.
The server copy is deleted when you choose Stop everywhere in the app, or after 400 days without use. Nightly backups of the encrypted data are kept in Cloudflare R2 for 30 days, so the service can be restored if something breaks. They are encrypted the same way, and we can't read them either.
This website
Cloudflare hosts this site and handles each request to deliver and protect it.
Cloudflare Web Analytics. We use it for one purpose: counting visits to pages, so we know which pages people find useful. It sets no cookies and doesn't identify you. Cloudflare runs it as our processor, which means it handles this data only on our instructions. There's no opt-out switch, because Cloudflare adds the counter itself, to every page of this site and the demos, and the count is anonymous.
When you tap a button to Etsy, we count the tap (which product, and when) and nothing about you.
The free calculators and the edition chooser on this site work out their answers in your browser. What you type into them isn't sent anywhere or saved.
To suggest the right version of this site, the page asks our server which country your connection comes from. The answer is a country code, worked out by Cloudflare; nothing is stored. If you choose Stay here, a note in this browser stops the suggestion.
Orders and messages
Orders, payments, downloads and Etsy messages are handled by Etsy under Etsy's privacy policy. Etsy passes us the details needed to complete your order. If you email us, we use your message only to reply.
Who handles your data
- Cloudflare: our processor. It hosts this site and the apps, counts visits, stores encrypted Sync data and the weekly usage reports, and passes emails sent to hello@neatwrenstudio.com on to our mailbox.

- Etsy: handles orders, payments, downloads and messages.
How long it's kept
- Emails to us: kept while we need them to help you, then deleted.

- Visit counts: kept one by one for 7 days, then only as totals, for up to six months.
- Taps to Etsy: three months.

- Sync: until you choose Stop everywhere, or 400 days without use. Encrypted backups: 30 days.
